Investigation Roundtable

A roundtable discussion during the investigation and arrest phases is an alternative method for involving prosecutors if a system for early involvement is not established. It is most effective to schedule this meeting prior to or shortly after a suspect is arrested.

Participants in the roundtable should include the investigator(s), laboratory personnel and representatives from the prosecutor’s office. The objectives of the discussion include, but are not limited to:

• Familiarizing all involved parties with the details of the case
• Talking through the arrest and prosecution of a suspect
• Prioritizing evidence
• Discussing possible defense theories (investigators and prosecutors)

An investigative roundtable discussion may help to bring cohesion to the investigative and prosecuting team by building a sound working relationship, establishing communication means and methods and ensuring all involved parties are aware of the facts and direction of the case.
