Best Practices: General Packaging

Home > Evidence Handling Procedures > Collection, Preservation, and Documentation > Best Practices: General Packaging

Regardless of the type of evidence item, its packaging should reflect the:

  • Incident date
  • Location
  • Investigative file number
  • Crime scene item number
  • Description of the item
  • Individual(s) who found, packaged, and sealed the evidence container
  • Signatures or initials of these individuals
  • Any other data required by the local agency protocols

In a major personal crime case firearm/toolmark examiners may expect evidence to be delivered from multiple participating agencies at different times; however the same general marking and packaging techniques should apply to the evidence.
