Collection, Preservation, and Documentation
The handling of physical evidence covers a wide variety of activities from the crime scene to the courtroom. In some jurisdictions, this can extend to the period after trial, including the destruction or other disposition of firearms. In most cases, forensic examiners do not directly control all aspects of evidence handling. However, the impact of evidence handling is such that examiners must be knowledgeable of these activities. The purpose of this module is to:
- Assist in understanding the division of labor as physical evidence moves from crime scene to courtroom
- Identify responsibilities throughout the process
- Address safety issues, including firearms safety, chemical safety, and biohazard concerns
Ideally, there is a seamless and documented movement of evidence throughout the process until the presentation of expert testimony in court.
