Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry
Technology Transfer Workshop

July 19-20, 2007
National Forensic Science Technology Center
Largo, Florida

Workshop Leader: Mike Morrison and Bill Wall
Workshop Instructors: Mike Morrison, Bill Wall, and Lisa Holt
Workshop Overview

The purpose of this technology transfer workshop is to provide the student with an introduction to liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS), the use of LC/MS/MS in the general unknown screening of drugs from biological specimens and the application of quantitative drug analysis using LC/MS/MS. The class includes both lecture and laboratory activities to illustrate the general principles presented.

The workshop will include instrumental theory as well as basic operation and maintenance. It will also allow the student hands-on experience with obtaining instrument method parameters for individual drugs, method development, instrument readiness as evaluated using standard solutions of analytes, and basic sample processing and drug identification. Calibration curves and individualized analysis of unknowns will also be introduced.
Learning Outcomes

At the completion of the Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry Workshop, the participant will acquire the knowledge to:
  • Understand general principles of liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry
  • Acquire method analyte parameters by drug infusion using Compound Optimization
  • Demonstrate system validity by evaluating standard solutions
  • Perform basic sample processing and drug identification
  • Develop calibration curves for drugs of interest
  • Perform unknown sample evaluation to determine possible analytes present
